CNN —Argentina’s President Javier Milei has banned gender-inclusive language in all official documents and public administration, the presidential spokesperson said Tuesday, as the far-right libertarian continues to implement his socially conservative agenda. The ban, effective immediately, will prohibit “inclusive language and everything related to the gender perspective throughout the national public administration,” Manuel Adornis, spokesperson for the Casa Rosada, said in his daily press conference. Spanish is a gender-defined language where most nouns are given a masculine “o” ending or a feminine “a” ending. This announcement comes after gender-inclusive language was banned in the military following a resolution by the country’s defense ministry. Last week, his government announced the closure of its anti-discrimination agency, saying the Ministry of Justice would absorb its functions.

Asked for his reaction on Tuesday, Mexico's leftist President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said he respected the voters' verdict, but added that he believed Milei's win is unlikely to alleviate Argentina's problems. But other leftist Latin American leaders were more supportive. Chilean President Gabriel Boric and Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva both extended best wishes to Milei. Lula's congratulations came despite Milei's harsh criticism of the Brazilian leader on the campaign trail, where at one point Milei labeled Lula an "angry communist" and corrupt. Milei found enthusiastic support among right-wing populists, including former U.S. President Donald Trump and former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who Lula narrowly defeated last year.

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - Argentinian President-elect Javier Milei arrived on Tuesday morning at the presidential residence in the suburbs of Buenos Aires to meet outgoing Peronist leader Alberto Fernandez, to begin a transition that looks likely to be complex. Local television showed the arrival of Milei, a libertarian who has pledged to privatize public firms, eliminate the central bank and dollarize the economy, at the presidential residence in Olivos. Fernandez failed to tame inflation heading towards 150%. Spokespeople for Milei and for Fernandez declined to give further details about the meeting. Milei, an outsider libertarian who has rattled the South American country's political landscape with his abrupt rise, beat Peronist Sergio Massa in a run-off election on Sunday.

The South American country nationalized 51% of the oil company more than a decade ago from Spain's Repsol (REP.MC). YPF is Argentina's largest oil firm and oversees development of Vaca Muerta, the world's second-largest shale gas reserve and fourth-largest shale oil reserve. Shares of YPF jumped more than 40% early in the session, before paring some gains to trade up 35.2%. The agreement with China has helped Argentina increase its depleted foreign currency reserves as it undergoes a major economic crisis, with annual inflation above 130% and central bank dollar reserves hitting negative levels. The Wednesday move in practice increases the amount Argentina can access as part of the swap line formalized in early 2023. This is the second swap line with China activated during Fernandez's presidency. According to an official bank source, the total amount of the swap line stood at 47 billion yuans . Libertarian Javier Milei, who has vowed to dollarize the economy and shut down the central bank, is seen as the front-runner.
